Queer sport takes over Vancouver

The Gay and Lesbian International Sports Association (GLISA) will hold the GILSA 2011 North America Outgames from July 25 – 31 in Vancouver, Canada. There is limited registration available for a few remaining competition events.

The event will include 18 sports including badminton, tenpin bowling, poker, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, track and field events, volleyball and a 10km run, supported by GLISA and Team Vancouver. More than 10 sports are offered at venues in Vancouver and the nearby suburbs of Whistler, Burnaby, Richmond, North Vancouver, and Surrey. Approximately 1200 participants are expected to take part in the multi-sport program.

A key component of the games is the Human Rights Conference with workshops on diversity and an awards ceremony recognising individuals and corporations that have influenced LGBT rights. There will also be a job fair, the Miss GLISA Pageant, cultural activities, a closing gala and the March of Athletes in the 2011 Pride Parade.

The North America Outgames will provide a women’s zone, queer and family-friendly spaces and Pride Week activities for all ages and abilities. It also coincides with the City of Vancouver’s 125th milestone anniversary of its incorporation in 1886.
