Lesbian group burgled

The offices of Ugandan lesbian human rights group Freedom and Roam Uganda (FARUG) were burgled on July 30 by people who used syringes to inject acid into locks in the building before breaking them open.

The burglars did not touch cash or a new television, but five computers, a server and documents including an electronic database of members’ names were taken.

“It seems they were looking for information and data – these are not ordinary thieves,” FARUG activist Jacqueline Kasha said.

“The mood here is very low. Members are worried and traumatised.”

The burglary came as the organisation was about to launch a campaign to denounce violence against gays and lesbians in Uganda.
