Northern Exposure

Northern Exposure

Recently I watched my morning news backdropped in pink. At lunch I read my daily newspaper on pink paper and later at the supermarket was amazed to see the array of pink products supporting breast cancer awareness.

I had a vision that one day soon World AIDS Day would be also be awash with its own colour -” RED.
This week we make this happen. We can spread the word by talking about what life is like for people living with HIV today; we can raise funds and wear red on 1 December.

To support HIV and AIDS awareness this week, there is a variety of activities.

On Saturday 29 November from 11am – 4pm in Byron Bay, Treatments by the Sea 7 is a free workshop for people living with HIV/AIDS that explores HIV transmission and infectivity. Contact ACON to book.

To commemorate all who have died of AIDS and to acknowledge the experience of those living with HIV/AIDS, a Candlelight Vigil will be held at Riverside Park, Lismore at 8pm on Monday 1 December. All are welcome.

Red Ribbons will be available throughout the Northern Rivers on 1 December. Funds raised contribute to improving the lives of people living with HIV/AIDS and limiting its spread.

Evans River Community School will stage a play on 1 December which explores HIV/AIDS over the past twenty years. First show at 2pm and then 7pm. Contact the school on 6682 6666.

Come and sample food from Lismore’s diverse cultural groups and learn about HIV/AIDS across the world at the Fountain Room, City Hall on 1 December, 11am – 12.30pm. Bring a gold coin to support Red Ribbons.

Finally, our major ACON fundraiser, GLAM goes Gaudy, will be held from 6.30pm on Thursday 4 December at the Lismore Workers Club. Hosted by local identities Michael Sharmon, Kate DeMarco and Dollywood, it includes trivia, Bingay and performances. Contact ACON to book for this fun-filled evening.

  1. The RED colour/product association already exists – it’s called Project RED and it’s a trademark, in case anyone else was wanting to get this done. It has been roundly criticised for delivering millions of dollars of brand value to the participating brands (Apple, Converse, U2, to name a few) while delivering only cents per product sold to AIDS causes.
