Lisa Williams: life, death and coming out

You could be forgiven for thinking that someone who believes they can converse with the dead would be truly settled in life.

But for British-born clairvoyant and medium Lisa Williams, seeing into realms that most others never will has clearly made issues closer to home a lot more difficult to perceive.

Best known for her television series’ Life Among The Dead and Voices from the Other Side, Williams ended her marriage in 2009 and is now in a relationship with her female partner, Holly.

“For many years, speaking to dead people was hard enough for people to accept me, but then on top of that to then say ‘by the way, I’m gay’, I didn’t want to acknowledge it,” Williams said.

“I was living this life that I didn’t want to accept. It was really hard.”

She returns to Australia this month for her biggest Australian tour to date, where she’ll be doing readings for some members of the audience. It comes after two previous sold-out tours and an upcoming spirituality conference she’ll conduct with her partner on the Gold Coast in November.

Williams, who now lives in Los Angeles with son Charlie, said she’s been communicating with dead people from the age of four — a talent she believes she inherited from her grandmother. Like American peer John Edward, her unusual set of skills, which also includes healing, has seen plenty of eyebrow-raising from critics globally.

But Williams has also faced plenty of scepticism closer to home.

“My Dad was a sceptic for many years until he travelled to Australia with me, strangely enough. He searched dressing rooms for hidden microphones and it was quite tough for me, but now he says he believes,” she said.

Given her father’s reluctance to accept her career path, it’s not hard to understand Williams’ apprehension in revealing her sexuality. She explained that coming out to her parents at the age of 37 was one of the hardest things she had to do, and initial reactions were as she had feared.

“My Dad wouldn’t believe it, he said he said was so ashamed,” she said.

Both her parents are now fully accepting of her relationship and great friends with Holly.

With her unique insight into life after death, it was worth asking where she thought gay people were headed.

“In my experience with those who have crossed, it is a place of love. It isn’t a place of ‘you didn’t live this way so we’ll punish you’. it is a place where all your loved ones accept you for who you are,” she said.

Phew!
