Queen for a day

Queen for a day

Freddie For A Day is a celebration of the life of Queen frontman Freddie Mercury. The annual worldwide dress-up event falls around Mercury’s birthday and is a fun way to remember one of the greatest artists in rock history.

But there’s a serious side to the fun, as money raised will support the fight against HIV/AIDS worldwide.

Those wanting to get involved can dress up as Freddie on September 5. In the meantime, they can get their friends, family, school friends or work colleagues to sponsor them.

London resident Liz Swanton began Freddie For A Day in 2008. Tying in with the eighth birthday celebrations for the Queen musical We Will Rock You, Swanton spent a whole working day dressed as Mercury. Soon her friends and co-workers joined the cause, raising thousands of pounds in the process. Swanton even met Queen members Brian May and Roger Taylor at the birthday performance of We Will Rock You.

This year, all funds raised in Australia will go to the AIDS Trust of Australia via a dedicated Freddie For A Day fundraising link.

The ‘Live Magic Freddie’ yellow jacket and white trousers outfit Mercury wore at Wembley Stadium in 1986 will be available to buy at the official Australian Freddie For A Day online store, with all profits going to charity. Alternatively, Freddies can make their own costume — visit the website for a vast range of Freddie’s iconic looks to get your creative juices flowing.
