Christian Values Institute compares Rudd to Judas on marriage equality

Judas kisses JesusThe Australian Christian Values Institute (ACVI) has likened Prime Minister Kevin Rudd to the Biblical figure Judas Iscariot, best known for his betrayal of Jesus Christ to the Romans in the New Testament, for Rudd’s support of marriage equality.

“Mr Rudd has sadly earned the nickname of Judas,” said ACVI spokesperson John Miller.

“He has betrayed the message of the Bible, which he knows well, and he has betrayed the many members of his own caucus who he knows are strongly and conscientiously opposed to same sex marriage.”

Miller went on to say Rudd’s lack of remorse made him even worse than Iscariot:

“The biblical Judas was quickly remorseful about what he did, but the political Mr Rudd is shameless in his betrayal. If Mr Rudd exemplifies Christian values in a politician then bring on the atheists with a moral conscience.”

In one biblical account, Iscariot committed suicide out of remorse at his betrayal of Jesus in exchange for thirty pieces of silver.

ACVI points to its newly-released “Christian Values Checklist” to show how Rudd’s shift on the issue of marriage equality brings the Labor party more in line with the Greens as a party that does not support so-called “Christian values”.

“The newly released Christian Values Checklist shows that Labor, under Mr Rudd, has embraced the Greens’ moral decadence and betrayed its working class constituency,” ACVI wrote in a statement.

Items on the checklist identified by ACVI as Christian values include rejecting carbon pricing, opposing vilification laws and allowing religious organisations to discriminate in employment practises.

  1. I did a search on the ACVI website so I could read the press release in its entirety and was very interested at what was written at the end:

So nice of Mr Miller to provide his mobile number; anyone want to join me in sending him nudie pics…?! :-)

  2. Why are we still giving air to these self-appointed, self-important, quasi-religious political lobbiests? They present themselves as the sole arbiters of Christian values and representing the entire Australian Christian community when few people, Christian or otherwiswe, are likely to have ever heard of them or agree with views. Acknowledging them only gives them unwarranted credibility and adds to their notoriety, empowering them and their voice. Like all bullies they should be ignored and denied the attention on which they feed. Better to spend our energy celebrating Mr Rudd”s Christian values .
