Lobby scores election hopefuls

The Greens and Democrats have the most to offer the gay and lesbian community at the November 24 federal election, according to a survey by the NSW Gay and Lesbian Rights Lobby.
The survey, released today, also showed clear differences between the Labor and Liberal parties on the issue of gay law reform.
Lobby co-convenors Emily Gray and Peter Johnson said the survey, developed in conjunction with ACON, rated each of the parties on their policy platform as well as their demonstrated commitment to equality and their general understanding of the issues faced by lesbians, gay men and their families.
“On the issue of equality for gay men and lesbians, there is a clear divide between the major parties,” Gray said.
“While both the Coalition and the ALP still refuse to provide formal recognition for our relationships in the form of civil unions or marriage, on issues such as de facto recognition, equal access to IVF and a commitment to consulting with the gay and lesbian community, the ALP comes out on top.”
Johnson said the Greens and Democrats not only had strong policies, but a history of supporting gay law reform.
“The Democrats in particular not only have well-developed policies, but an excellent track record of supporting and introducing legislation aimed at achieving equality for the gay and lesbian community,” he said.
“The Greens also displayed a high level of commitment to end discrimination against lesbians and gay men, unlike Family First, which refused to even reply to provide a response to our survey.
“With a relatively high proportion of gay and lesbian voters in key seats such as Wentworth and North Sydney, the pink vote will play a pivotal role in the upcoming election.
“Gay and lesbian issues will continue to be important as long as political parties pursue policies that financially penalise and discriminate against people for who they love.”
The survey will be formally launched this Sunday at the GLRL’s Pink Picnic for Equality from noon at Rushcutters Bay Park.
