Big win for slimmed single

In a reality television first, 34-year-old openly lesbian Queenslander Margie Cummins has won season seven of Channel Ten’s The Biggest Loser competition.

The finale screened last night.

Cummins beat three other contestants to be crowned the winner, losing 73.2kg during her three months in The Biggest Loser house.

It’s the first time an openly gay person has won a major Australian reality television show.

To celebrate the win, Cummins, fellow contestant Brenda Hunt and The Biggest Loser trainer Michelle Bridges met up with punters at Sydney’s Beresford Hotel last night.

Cummins told the Star Observer she was “over the moon” with the win and feeling great.

“Physically I’m feeling on top of the world,” she said.

“I’m feeling as fit as a fiddle and just loving life to the fullest and exercising like a demon, life couldn’t be better.”

Cummins said she hopes her win inspires those in the LGBTI community to improve their health.

“At the end of the day, if you just apply yourself and sacrifice certain things in your life in order to become a happier and healthier person, it’s doable.”

“The success of the weight loss came down to being open and honest, not just with my trainer, but with myself as well.

“It was really important to be the person I am and that means I am a lesbian, so not fighting the fact. I’ve got this great opportunity now to be a strong woman and a lesbian and be successful and prove to people outside that the gay community has a lot to offer.”

Cummins takes home a $220,000 cash prize.
