From Vodafail to an epic win

Comedy duo TV Live On Stage — aka Scott Dawkins and Sheona Urquhart — had an unexpected viral hit on their hands earlier this year after they put their frustrations with beleaguered telco Vodafone to good use.

The pair wrote and filmed a satirical spoof, set to the music of Lady Gaga’s Telephone, called Vodafail The Musical.

More than 150,000 YouTube views later, Dawkins and Urquhart return to the stage next month with a considerably larger fan base than before.

“It’s all getting bigger than Ben Hur. We want to outdo last year’s show, and our Telephone spoof. It’s epic, although when you have no budget, anything’s epic!” Dawkins told the Star Observer.

They’ll premiere a new video at the show, this time satirising the fitness industry, but for the most part, it’ll be live-action comedy. The pair play characters including Coburg-tough brother and sister Elias and Chantel, co-hosts of a daytime cooking show, political hopeful Tim Goodfellow, and clueless, fame-hungry dancers Kate and Pete.

He admitted the strain of putting on a multi-character, multimedia/live action stage show occasionally got to them.

“We’re handling it a bit better emotionally than we did last year,” he laughed. “Either I was crying or Sheona was crying — it was all very dramatic, but none of it was on stage.

“I had a bit of a freakout the other day about the scale of what we were trying to do, and Sheona repeated the same ‘calm down’ speech back to me that I’d already given her.

“I told her to at least get some original content — I know my own lines!”
