White out!

Europe’s hedonistic gay and lesbian white party, LaLeche!, is heading Down Under on the Labour Day long weekend with helmers, the Matinée Group, looking to give Sydney’s partygoers a taste of their decadent world tour.

Doubling as the official Sleaze Ball after-party, organisers are promising the event will set a new standard in production and entertainment when it lights up the Metro Theatre on Sunday, October 3.

“Everybody knows Sydney is one of the world’s greatest metropolises,” Matinée founder Manolo Soria said.

“As a company open to the world, being able to reach out all the way to Sydney from Barcelona has been a pleasure and a priority for us.”

Now 13 years old, the Matinée Group has had unprecedented international success for a gay and lesbian organisation and is responsible for a string of club events and festivals attended by nearly a million people yearly. These include a weekly Saturday residency at Ibiza’s iconic Amnesia, the 50,000 attendee Circuit Festival in Barcelona and the Matinée Summer/Winter Festivals.

“One of the keys to Matinée’s success has clearly been the plurality of its crowd. We picked up on Spain’s potential as a gay nightlife hotspot before anyone else did and took the risk of opening the country’s first gay venue,” Soria said.

One of the big names travelling with Matinée from Barcelona is their resident All Star DJ, Lydia Sanz. Having already garnered a dedicated international fan base with her unique mix of European house, gay and lesbian fans were credited with Sanz’s quick rise to prominence at such a young age.

“Gay crowds are usually really demanding, and that’s something I love,” Sanz said.

“If you give them what they are asking for while in the DJ booth they make you feel like the happiest person on earth.”

At a time when female DJs are still yet to receive the same headliner attention as their male counterparts, Sanz also had a simple answer for why she’s managed to buck the trend and gain the coveted position as the first ever female Matinée All Star DJ.

“Without doubt, [it’s] my passion for the music itself. I believe girls are beginning to get into DJing because there is more and more evidence that female DJs can make it to the top. Not so long ago, DJing was like soccer — ‘a man thing’. This is finally changing,” she said.

Joining Sanz will be New York’s Corey Craig and a swag of Aussie DJ talent, as well as house star Peyton and vocalist MeOmi.
