Gay and trans volunteers needed

The Open Door is looking to train gay or bisexual men to join its team of volunteer facilitators with the Western Sydney Coming Out Group.

The Western Sydney Coming Out Group is a free, non-religious, mixed peer support group that meets the first Thursday night of each month in Penrith. Once trained, volunteers will be rostered on intermittently to co-facilitate the coming out group.

Open Door is also looking to start a peer support group in Penrith for the transgender community of Western Sydney and the Blue Mountains. There are spaces available for transgender people to train as volunteer facilitators for the group.

The Gay and Lesbian Counselling Service will conduct training for people interested in either role at the Open Door in Cranebrook on June 11, 12, 18 and 19. The sessions will run from 9.15am to 4.30pm, with breaks for morning and afternoon tea and lunch. Open Door will provide all meals and all training materials.

With these groups, people in Western Sydney don’t need to travel into the city to access support. The Open Door is especially short on male and transgender volunteers.

  1. Training usually costs over $350.00 per person but we have secured funding to train volunteers at no cost to them. Its a wonderful opportunity to gain valuable skills and help extend community support to those living and working outside the inner city.
