Mardi Gras commends the community

New Mardi Gras will continue its efforts to re-connect with the community, with the introduction of an awards ceremony at next year’s launch.

Community groups have been encouraged to get involved with the Mardi Gras process, by nominating people who have provided outstanding work and assistance to the community over the past year. Mardi Gras’ launch which will be held during Fair Day.

We were thinking about what are the key things that make Mardi Gras so special and so different, and it occurred to us that it’s really the community which gives Mardi Gras its strength, said New Mardi Gras spokesman Benedict Brook.

Mardi Gras is obviously a highlight of the year but the community is there throughout the year and we thought it would be good to really involve them with Mardi Gras to show that it’s a key plank in the gay and lesbian community of Sydney.

The move comes following a decision earlier this year to hold the Mardi Gras launch during Fair Day for the first time, also in an effort to re-solidify the organisation’s community ties.

The decision also came as a result of a shorter Festival season next year, Brook said.

It’s a week shorter so they’re packing a lot more in, so Fair Day seemed like a natural place to put the launch, because it’s the second biggest event, outside of the parade for the whole season.
