Be safe, Wherever Sex Happens

ACON has launched a new condom reinforcement campaign in time for the Mardi Gras festival and Summer party season.

“Wherever Sex Happens… Slip It On!” was adapted from an innovative campaign developed by the Victorian AIDS Council, and makes it’s debut this month.

The campaign seeks to reminds gay men to be prepared with condoms whether they are in a place sex is expected to happen – such as in the bedroom, around the home or at a sex on premises venue- or whether they are not- such as travelling on a plane, or at the shops.

“Wherever Sex Happens… Slip It On!” aims to build on ACON’s popular Slip It On campaign and logo which ACON believes is now the most easily recognised safe sex icon in NSW.

The campaign will include print ads in gay media and a strong online and social media presence, with a campaign specific website, whereversexhappens.org.au, set up to relay relevant information that reinforces the need for men to carry condoms and lube with them for use when situations turn steamy.

The website also addresses issues related to minimising HIV risk with information about sex-on-premises venues, on-line cruising and hook ups, risk reduction strategies and a reminder to test regularly for sexually transmitted infections such as syphilis.

ACON’s Director of Community Health, Geoff Honnor, said the campaign was a creative twist on an enduring message.

“Twenty six years into the HIV epidemic, condoms remain the most effective way to prevent HIV as well as many other sexually transmissible infections.”

“We’ve avoided any increase in HIV rates in New South Wales for the last 11 years because most gay men continue to use condoms most of the time. It’s an important message for everyone and one that never goes out of style. “
