Ace Girl shows her colours

A member of Melbourne lesbian tennis club Ace Girls has put her pride on display at today’s Australian Open.

Ace Girls team captain TJ attended day three of play and wore a rainbow flag around her shoulders while spectating in Margaret Court Arena.

TJ said she wanted to wear the flag as a show of solidarity with the LGBTI community in the wake of anti-gay comments made by former world number one tennis champion Margaret Court.

“I think it’s almost a perfect statement because it’s not disrupting play, its a wonderful message and you can do it silently,” TJ told the Star Observer.

“It fits in with what people do at the tennis, which is show their colours.”

TJ said she had objected to Court’s recent comments on homosexuality.

“She’s a prominent person who’s done wonderful things in tennis, but on the other hand, perhaps she’s crossed the line in respectful debate.”

The Ace Girls was established to offer a supportive environment for lesbian and bisexual women to play the sport.

The group participates in tournaments around Victoria and has competed in the Gay Games.

An online campaign has called tennis fans to display rainbow flags en masse at Margaret Court Arena during the last weekend (Jan 27 – 29) of the Melbourne Grand Slam event.

Court recently indicated she supports so-called conversion therapy for same-sex attracted people.

Court, who is the founder and senior pastor at Victory Life Church in Perth, has urged Australians to take a stand against same-sex marriage, saying no human law could ever change God’s divine laws.

“Politically correct education has masterfully escorted homosexuality out from behind closed doors, into the community openly and now is aggressively demanding marriage rights that are not theirs to take,” she said.

Court said society was best served by strong family units that comprised a mum, dad and children and that there was no reason to put forward “alternative, unhealthy, unnatural unions” as a substitute.

“To dismantle this sole definition of marriage and try to legitimise what God calls abominable sexual practices that include sodomy, reveals our ignorance as to the ills that come when society is forced to accept law that violates their very own God-given nature of what is right and what is wrong.”

  1. Just as a matter of interest the word sodomy came into being with the King James bible, and the Sodom and Gomorrah story is open to interpretation

  2. Margaret Court’s distorted “version” of God is an abominable creature who rejects some humans and loves only those he thinks are ok. He is a capricious being of questionable morals and is certainly not the God that the majority of knowing Christians have in their hearts.
