Britney Spears’ eagerly anticipated new single Hold It Against Me was released yesterday and has already snatched the top spot on Australian iTunes.

The dance anthem, penned by hitmakers Max Martin and Dr. Luke, is the lead single from

Brit’s seventh studio album, which is due to hit shelves in March.

The diva’s latest single has generated even more attention than usual – largely due to an upcoming chart battle with Lady Gaga.

Monsters will have to wait until February for a new dose of Gaga but it’s time to evaluate Britney’s first strike.

Hold It Against Me leaked last week in demo form and received a mixed response from fans, but the finished version is a big improvement.

The general consensus appears to be that it doesn’t live up to previous hits like Toxic and Gimme More but iTunes doesn’t lie.

What do you think – is Hold It Against Me enough to dethrone Gaga or a misfire from one of pop’s biggest superstars?
