ACADEMY-Award winning Milk screenwriter Dustin Lance Black, 39, has been confirmed by The Advocate as the guy with whom Olympic diver Tom Daley, 19, is in a relationship.
The UK Sun‘s journalist Dan Wootton also confirmed this via Twitter by posting a picture of the front cover of his newspaper’s Wednesday edition with the headline “Tom’s love is Oscar-winning gay activist… and 20 years older” – in what the paper described as an “Olympics Hero Exclusive”.
The Sun, which reported the match, also noted that the couple wasn’t bothered by a 20 year age gap.
“He’s besotted with Dustin,” a source told the British paper.
“They love each other and aren’t concerned what anyone says about age difference.”
Tom’s family have also spoken to the media in support of Tom’s coming out. His grandparents admitted to the UK’s Daily Mail that they where “confused” and that the news had come “out of the blue” when they found out from Daley the day before his ‘no big deal’ coming out YouTube video.
“We asked him if he was absolutely sure. He’s our first grandson from our son who died,” Daley’s grandparents told the Daily Mail.
“We have always been supportive of him and we always will. We’re not old-fashioned, in fact we’re quite liberal. But I do think he’s too young to be making this sort of decision… But we hugged him, we thanked him for coming to see us, and we’ll be seeing him over Christmas. We’ll always be here for Tom.”
It appears Daley has a very supportive family unit, and the Star Observer hopes that this sets precedent and inspiration to other families for when their sons and daughters come out.
Meanwhile, many social media users have expressed they ‘already knew’ that Daley was “gay” long before he did, even though he has not specifically indicated whether he was gay or bisexual and instead leaving a cryptic but honest admission that he “still fancies girls” yet he is in a serious relationship with a guy and he “couldn’t be happier.”
Daley also himself admitted in his YouTube video that he was in fact surprised about his new relationship.
“It did take me by surprise a little bit but ‘something just clicked,” he said.
“It felt right… My whole world just changed there and then.
“Is a big deal? I don’ think so.”
Entertainment news source E! News also confirmed the relationship between Daley and Black, with sources revealing that the couple were spotted together in Hollywood in October.
The support for Daley continues with celebrities around the world congratulating him. Australia’s Kylie Minogue tweeted: “Inspiring and brave…as always!!!”, while British comedian Russell Brand said: “Well done sunshine, dive into love”.
