Convicts heading south

The Sydney Convicts head south this weekend to contest the 2010 Purchas Cup, playing against the Melbourne Chargers gay rugby team on Saturday, September 4.

The cup is named after the founder of the Sydney Convicts and Australian gay rugby ambassador Andrew ‘Fuzz’ Purchas, and will be contested annually by Australian gay rugby clubs.

While the Convicts are the more seasoned of the two teams, the Chargers have the home-turf advantage.

After the game, the Chargers and the Convicts will convene at Melbourne’s men-only Laird Hotel to take part in the Chargers’ first major fundraiser, Wrestle A Rugger, in which team members will be pitted against each other in bouts of jelly wrestling.

Both teams aim to make this the first of many events where the Chargers meet the Convicts, both on and off the field — we suppose jelly wrestling is as good a way as any to get to know someone.
