Diving for a cause
The Diving For Life International Gay and Lesbian SCUBA Jamboree, now in its 19th year, is a fundraising event that offers an annual fun-filled week of scuba diving in an exotic locale.
Around 100-125 GLBTI divers from around the world are expected to attend this year’s event — among them, members of the Sydney Underwater Bushwalking Society (SUBS), Sydney’s gay and lesbian scuba club.
This year’s Jamboree will be held at Anthony’s Key Resort in Roatan, Honduras, from October 2-9. Roatan is a wonderful dive destination with healthy reefs and sea life, located in the temperate waters of the Caribbean.
As well as diving, the resort offers activities including horseback riding, dolphin encounters and kayaking. Anthony’s Key Resort was the site for the first Diving for Life in 1992.
During the week, divers engage in fundraising activities such as raffles. Funds raised are donated to charitable organisations that directly benefit the health concerns of the GLBTI community worldwide.
The main fundraising raffle is supplied with items brought by divers. Previously, the Australian contingent (SUBS included) has donated items that are uniquely Australian.
In the past, SUBS have reached out to the wider gay community for donations, and they’re doing so again this year. If you or your business would like to discuss offering products and services for the raffle, visit www.gaydive.org.au
