Doyle pushes for marriage equality

Melbourne City lord mayor and former Victorian Liberal leader Robert Doyle has joined the growing chorus of Liberal Party members to support marriage equality.
Doyle’s new position goes against that of the new Victorian Premier Denis Napthine who just last week said he opposed marriage equality when questioned about it during talk show host Ellen DeGeneres’ visit.
Doyle is the second former Victorian Liberal Party leader to support the cause after former premier Jeff Kennett reversed his stance last year.
Doyle told Fairfax Media at the weekend that the government had no place in people’s bedrooms.
“Don’t try and define what a family unit is. A family unit is a family unit that functions,” he said.
“I think we’ve all moved on. I think it’s time to say this doesn’t need to be a divisive issue.”
He called on the federal government to change laws to allow same-sex marriage.
