Gay couple beaten, arrested

Two Zimbabwean gay men have pleaded guilty to having a sexual relationship after their landlady and a fellow tenant beat them up and denounced them to police.

Nigel Ruredzo, 28, and Shine Njawara, 29, were tenants in a townhouse in the town of Bindura in northern Zimbabwe.

Their landlady, Patricia Chimange, and a man, Russell Makau also lived in the house and around 4.30am on November 26 they were woken by intimate noises coming from the room that Ruredzo and Njawara shared.

Makau and Chimange burst in on them while they were having sex, beating them with a stick while verbally abusing them.

They were then arrested by police. Makau was not charged for beating the pair.

Ruredzo and Njawara will go to trial on December 29. Under Zimbabwean law the pair may be jailed for up to three years.
