Mrs Brown weighs in on Irish Marriage Equality Referendum

A MESSAGE from ‘The Mammy-in-chief” Mrs Brown is the latest video encouraging Irish citizens to vote yes in the country’s upcoming marriage equality referendum.

Mrs Brown’s “Address to the Nation”, directed by Lenny Abrahamson, stars Brendan O’Carroll as Mrs Brown and Rory Cowan.

In the video, the 92-year-old widow’s gay son Rory (played by Cowan) tries to direct her address away from “midget equality” to the topic of general marriage equality.

“I can’t describe the joy I feel to see my son Rory having the same opportunity for happiness as everybody else’s son,” she says, bringing a tear to Rory’s eyes.

“What’s all the f**king fuss?”

She goes on to add: “Marriage isn’t easy, changing the law isn’t easy, and changing attitude is even harder.”

Mrs Brown also recalls the absurdity of the times when Catholics and Protestants or people of different races, weren’t allowed to marry, and when women weren’t allowed to vote.

She finishes her video by imploring citizens to “go out and vote, that’s the important thing”.

And to “keep in mind, support midgets”.

The video’s release coincides with the opening of Cowan’s Yes Equality Shop in Dublin’s city centre, which will sell Yes Equality merchandise and provide information ahead of the May 22 referendum.

Mrs Brown and Rory join other Irish celebrities such as singer/songwriter Hozier and actor Colin Farrell in support of the campaign.
