Secret grandchild ‘a relief’

An English woman’s grieving process has been made easier by the revelation that the biological child of her sister’s lesbian partner is also her grandchild.

Son Charlie Lowden donated sperm so that his aunt and her partner could have a child that was biologically related to both women when he was 16 but died in December of 2009 at age 20 due to complication from a surgical procedure.

The women named the boy Carlton, and after Charlie’s death the women told Lynn Lowden who their sperm donor had been.

Lowden told the Daily Mail newspaper that the news had been comforting after her loss.

“Not many kids of 16 would offer to help in the way he did but Charlie was kind and thoughtful,” said Lowden, “He had an old head on young shoulders.”

“When our Charles died we were broken hearted. We thought we had nothing left of him. But there is something left of him … he has left a legacy.’

“I just wish that we had known about all of this before he died so that Charlie could know we had accepted it.”

Husband Charles Lowden had had suspicions about Carlton’s parentage but not even Charlie saying, “Who’s the daddy? I’m the daddy” when playing with Carlton made them twig.

There is no law covering what age a sperm donor must be in cases of home insemination from a known donor in the UK, however in cases of home insemination, British law deems the donor to be legally and financially responsible for the child.

Donors through clinics do not have the same responsibilities but must be over 18 and under 45.
