Keeping your sugar daddy sweet

It is as inevitable as sequins at Mardi Gras that in every couple one guy will be older than the other. Not that this is a problem: I am a huge advocate for the older male.

The age gap may be just a couple of months, a few years or a decade, but it’s something about them that makes the older gent so tempting. It could be that they’re stronger, appear more mature and have had time to know what they want in life.

Whatever the case, there are some rules to make sure the balance remains even in your relationship.

Firstly, acknowledge the age gap. Point it out with humour, which is the best mechanism to become more relaxed with someone. Pet names such as cradle snatcher or fossil could be effective. But when their face starts making more wrinkles than usual, it’s time to stop poking fun.

Next thing to keep in mind is that when in a group of his friends be prepared for conversations where you won’t know what they’re talking about.

Guys tend to keep in packs of the same age group as they have more in common. They usually discuss past situations that happened in their year. Just contribute when you can and remember they may be intimidated by you and your youth.

For any couple to work, balance is a necessity. And just because he’s older does not mean that he wears the pants. Feng-shui says that balance is the key to happiness so make sure you both give and take.
For example, it’s nice if they pay for you all the time (not to mention a cost-saving for you) but it doesn’t make the relationship karma-even. Try to avoid becoming your partner’s handbag or doormat. Stand your ground and say that you will pay for dinner sometimes, or at least pay them back in other ways.

Which brings us to the bedroom. As we haven’t roamed the earth for as long as they have, most older lovers tend to work harder to impress you under the sheets. The only downside is that this is sometimes interpreted as a controlling tactic. Don’t let them intimidate you: keep that balance in check by taking charge just as often.

Always remember that age is all a state of mind – as long as you have the basics in common and you enjoy being in each other’s company, the age thing isn’t that big a deal. It worked for Catherine Zeta-Jones, after all.
