Aurora heads to New York

Community fundraising champion Aurora is taking its supporters to New York at its annual dinner this year.

The theme for this year’s dinner on June 27, is New York, New York -” tying the event in with the 40th anniversary of the Stonewall riots.

It’s glamorous, fun, very social, and features the best in food, wine and entertainment, Aurora chair Alex Sosnov said.

Of course, for Aurora, this is also our most important fundraiser, and a chance to ensure we can continue to support our community over the next year.

The Aurora dinner, our gala event of the year is held on, or close as possible to, 27 June, the first night of the infamous 1969 Stonewall riots in New York City. 2009 marks the 40th anniversary of Stonewall, and commemorating this important milestone is an important part of our plans for this year’s Aurora Dinner.

The artwork for the event, featuring a New York skyline and Broadway lights, has been designed by Sydney gay icon Ian Jopson, now a resident of New York City.

Event director Anthony Hillis said the styling and entertainment would reference 1930s New York.

We’ll be drawing upon the beautiful art deco designs of New York City in the early 20th century, he said.

While taking some inspiration from iconic architecture such as Radio City Musical Hall and the Chrysler Building, our central focus will be recreating Paddington Town Hall with the look and feel of the legendary Rainbow Room, on the 65th floor at 30 Rockefeller Plaza.

The 2008 Aurora dinner sold out and raised $60,000.

info: The 2009 Aurora dinner is at Paddington Town Hall, Saturday, 27 June, 6.30pm. Ticket: $195 from 7 May via [email protected] or 8323 4041.
