Captain of my ship

Captain of my ship

Each venue I perform at has its one special shining characteristic. Not only do they give me a stage to jump around on and chatter, but they provide me with family-like comfort, which really makes it a joy to come to work.
I love going to work, even with the crazy hours and being submerged in the scene.
Now, before the internet comments start piling up, I have worked in 9-to-5 employment, as well as shift work and graveyard shifts, so I have tried it all and am extremely happy that I have stumbled upon this career.
So I was over the moon when approached by the management of the Midnight Shift to put together a new show for Sunday nights. Having worked at the Midnight Shift just a year or so shy of a decade – my first ever performance was at Shop Yourself Stupid on a ute out the front of the Shift in 1997 – ideas started to flood my mind.
The Midnight Shift has a downstairs section – okay, wipe that shocked expression off your faces, there is one – where shows are staged featuring Penny Tration, Trudi Valentine and me. Though they are not big-budget shows, there is a drag presence that seems to get the audience hooting and whooping every show time.
So my brief for the new show was fairly simple – camp, camp, camp and more camp. Naturally I recruited my gorgeous sister and girlfriend Verushka Darling to put the extravaganza together – she being the Queen of Camp and all.
Normally I am a team player when it comes to putting a show together – working my hot glue finger to the bone and listening to the likes of the very experienced Vanity Faire as she helps us create the illusion we seek.
But now I find myself the captain of the ship – a role I am not too familiar with – and working with a very patient Verushka as she tries to extract from me the finer details of my vision.
Hair, costumes, music, choreography, lighting and DVD editing – it all has to come from somewhere. And that somewhere now is me. Now I know what they mean when they talk about the pressure from the top.
Anyway, I am not sure how, but we have managed to achieve the impossible and the finishing touches are now being put on the new show Fallen Divas.
With a nice chunk of sound bites from movies I have never heard of – but Verushka seems to know them by heart – we have pulled together a show that falls somewhere between New Idea and Variety. Think Paris and Britney and you might just be on the right track.
I hope I see you all there.
