Eurovision’s lesbian chic

Lesbian chic stormed the Eurovision Song Contest last weekend with Serbian entrant Marija Serifovic’s power ballad Moltiva -“ Prayer in English -“ coming top in the annual camp battle royal, this year held in the Finnish capital Helsinki.

With 268 points, Serifovic edged out strong competition from Ukrainian drag queen Verka Serduchka to bring the contest to the former war-torn Balkan state in 2008.

Serifovic, who sported a dinner suit, black glasses and a cropped haircut, was joined on stage by five women who writhed around her. They were also wearing suits but were somewhat taller and had bigger hair. Serifovic is popular with the small gay community of the majority Orthodox Christian country.

According to Reuters, a partygoer leaving the capital city Belgrade’s only gay-friendly club commented that Serifovic’s victory wasa big win for Serbia, a small step for gay rights.
