GLORIAs postponed

GLORIAs postponed

The third annual Gay & Lesbian Outrageous, Ridiculous and Ignorant comment Awards (GLORIAs) have been postponed by the organiser, NSW Labor MLC Penny Sharpe.

Public voting on award nominees had been due to begin on May 7 but Sharpe recently posted on Facebook that a revamped GLORIAs would be held later in the year, with a new date to be announced soon.

The event was to be held on May 17 at NSW Parliament House to coincide with the International Day Against Homophobia (IDAHO).

In the meantime nominations for all categories will remain open.

“Every day there are public comments about people in the LGBTI community that are ignorant, unhelpful and sometimes downright dangerous,” Sharpe said when launching the nomination process in April.

“The GLORIAs shine a light on these comments and provide an opportunity to expose homophobia and transphobia in our community and have some fun at the same time. Unfortunately there is no shortage of material.”

People can nominate comments by public figures that have made their blood boil during 2011-2012 in six categories — media, sport, politics and law, religion, silliest comment from within the LGBTI community, and international.

The Golden GLORIA for the worst comment of the year will be decided by a “boo-off” at a gala dinner and awards ceremony.
