Have a gay Australia Day

The Australia Day public holiday is upon us this Wednesday 26 January and everyone, it seems, is gearing up to party. The biggest event is Gay Day at Home nightclub between 2pm and midnight, and there’s bound to be something there for just about everyone. It’s a fusion of popular party Queer Nation and regular club nights Crash from Phoenix, Odyssey House Sundays, Gaysha from the Midnight Shift and New & Used by DJ Kelly Lynch.

The impressive DJ line-up includes the likes of Neal Crawford, Jake Kilby, Chip, Luke Leal, Alex Taylor, Alan Thompson, Kate Monroe, Shigeki, Mandy Rollins and Seymour Butz, to name but a few. Performers include Vanity Faire, Dallas Dellaforce, Brown Skin, Portia Turbo and Tess Tickle. Tickets are $30 (plus booking fee) from Toolshed, Hum Records and www.gayday.com.au.

For the bears among us, on Australia Day eve (Tuesday 25 January) Harbour City Bears are holding their annual Advance Australia Fur party. Featuring DJ Mark Alsop, it’s on at T2 Bar, Taylor Square, from 9pm to 3am. Tickets are $20 from Hum Records or www.hcbears.com or 9990 6440.

Also on the 25th, Arq is holding the imaginatively titled Arqstralia Day. There will be an underwear competition voted for by the crowd, with the winner walking away $1,000 richer, plus giveaways from undies company Aussiebum. The music will be played by DJs Neal Crawford, Dan Murphy, Greg Boladian, Scott Pullen and Ish. It starts at 9pm and advance tickets are $20 from Arq.

Midnight Shift Club is celebrating Australia Day on the 25th with Dreamtime, a night of classic, funky, deep and dirty house from 10pm. The DJs are Peter Fam, Paul Goodyear and Chip. Tickets are $20 and available from the Midnight Shift Video Bar.
