Lobby to celebrate adoption change

The NSW Gay and Lesbian Rights Lobby will host a party to celebrate the legalisation of same-sex adoption.

The celebration, to be held at the Bank Hotel from 7pm on September 28, marks an end to the final piece of direct legislative discrimination against same-sex couples in NSW.

NSW GLRL policy coordinator Sen Raj said the passing of the legislation was a milestone.

“We are hosting the event as part of our Rights Night series to celebrate a historic achievement in the recognition of same-sex couples in NSW,” Raj said.

“This reform effectively ends the last piece of direct legislative discrimination against same-sex couples in NSW.”

Raj said the celebration would be a social networking night “to [celebrate] the path towards legislative equality in NSW and to thank the many individuals and groups who have been a part of this process”.

But he said the GLRL was still focused on several state-based items.

“Our state priorities will focus on improving anti-homophobia education and reviewing the exemptions in anti-discrimination law, particularly in relation to faith-based bodies,” Raj said.

  1. Apologies for the omission, but surrogacy reform is part of the NSW GLRL agenda this year. We are working closely with the NSW Attorney-General’s office on this issue. Our policy papers and media releases on this issue can be found on our website.

  2. The job in NSW is still not over yet – what about surrogacy reform?????

The NSW Government continues to say and quote “we will introduce the Surrogacy Bill 2010 into the Parliament soon” – when will that be, next Christmas perhaps????
