Nazi-brander shadows gay reforms

The Queensland senator who once used parliamentary privilege to brand Greens senators Bob Brown and Kerry Nettle as Nazis will now be responsible for the Coalition’s position on equality reforms.
George Brandis was named shadow attorney-general on Friday, and has had much to say on same-sex issues.
He once estimated in parliamentary debate that about one million Australians were “so circumstanced” as to be gay or lesbian, and supported efforts to end discrimination against them.
“I hope the government loses no time in implementing [HREOC’s] recommendations to the full,” he said last year before it was released.
Brandis has attacked conservatives clinging to the notion of “family values” at the expense of the rights and dignity of gay people.
“There are certain people, some of them occupying the lunar fringe of my party, and certain extreme religious groups who attempt to make that antithesis. As if homosexual people are not members of families. It is an ignorant, absurd and offensive notion,” he told Parliament.
