GLBT CANCER STORIES BOOK LAUNCH

A new book of the personal stories of gay and lesbian people affected by cancer was launched in Adelaide on 10 May. It’s a Real Bugger Dear, Isn’t It? includes 15 short stories on dealing with cancer in differing ways, both heart-wrenching and with cheeky humour. Contributor Steven Dewhirst tells a story of survival from eight different cancers. The book is available for free, aside from postage, from the AIDS Council of South Australia on (08) 8334 1606, or email [email protected].

CALL FOR E-BOOK SUBMISSIONS

Hot on the heels of the success of the 2006 Boys Summer Collection, gay-ebooks.com.au is calling for submissions for a new anthology of Australian gay male fiction. Those works selected will then be available to download for free from the www.gay-ebooks.com.au website. New works of less than 3,000 words and which fit broadly into the definition of gay fiction are welcome. Established and budding authors should email their short stories to [email protected] by 17 June.

BLUE MOUNTAINS GOES BENT

The third annual Bent Art exhibition is to be held on the Queen’s Birthday long weekend, 8-11 June, at Katoomba Civic Centre. Works with diverse themes and media from GLBT artists who live in or have strong connections to the Blue Mountains will be on display. Organisers say, The artists draw from a plethora of ideas, experiences and creative talents to create an art exhibition that moves, stimulates and challenges its audience. More information is available at www.pinkmountains.com.au.

HEALTH IN DIFFERENCE CONFERENCE

Registrations are still open for the national Health In Difference conference, to be held in Brisbane on 14 and 15 June, as part of the city’s Pride festival. The conference will explore the health of GLBT Australians, and includes one of the first public presentations from the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission’s inquiry into discrimination against people in same-sex relationships. A mixture of over 80 presentations and workshops will be held on a range of issues including relationships, aging, domestic violence, men’s and women’s health, arts and culture. In addition, entertainer Vanessa Wagner will be hosting a cocktail party for delegates. To register for the conference go to www.healthindifference07.org.au. The Queensland Association for Healthy Communities and ACON are community partners in the event.
