Parade to have multiple chiefs

New Mardi Gras (NMG) will not have a single chief of parade this year.

Instead, the 2011 parade on March 5 will be lead by a group of high-profile gays and lesbians.

Hollywood star Lily Tomlin is the fist of the names in the group to be announced.

The gay comedienne and actor, who starred in blockbuster movie 9 to 5, has promised a spectacular costume for her first ever appearance at the Parade.

“We are so excited that Lily will be joining us in this year’s Parade,” NMG CEO Michael Rolik said.

“It’s an honour to be able to welcome to our celebration such a stellar actor – and one who has had the courage to come out in an industry that is not always welcoming to GLBTQ people.”

Other names joining Lily in this section of the Parade will be confirmed in the coming weeks.

This year’s parade is expected to focus on marriage equality.

In response to the ‘Say Something’ campaign underpinning this year’s Mardi Gras, at least 15 floats have chosen to voice their opposition to the fact that Australian law does not recognise same-sex marriage.

Against the backdrop of increased international pressure on Australia to change federal marriage laws, after the United Nations Human Rights Council last week urged Australia to recognise same-sex marriage, the GLBTIQ communities will be united in sending a clear message.

Brides and brides, grooms and grooms will feature prominently — and there will be a special same-sex marriage-themed spectacle to be revealed closer to the date.

The Dykes on Bikes are again starting off the parade with a massive roar.

The Star Observer is giving you the chance to be on the back of one of those bikes, basking in the screams of excitement from the crowd.
