Phelps back Newhouse

Lesbian identity Professor Kerryn Phelps has weighed into the Federal election in the seat of Wentworth, giving her support to Labor candidate George Newhouse.
Prof Phelps attended his film fundraiser at the Randwick Ritz Cinema last week, where she introduced Sicko, a Michael Moore documentary about the failures of the American healthcare system.
Newhouse and Phelps used the opportunity to talk about how the Australian healthcare system could be improved.
Prof Phelps later encouraged the gay community to think and vote nationally rather than locally.
She pointed to the government’s banning of same-sex marriage, its attempt to block lesbians from accessing Medicare funding for IVF, the exclusion of same-sex families from the Medicare safety net definition of family, and their delay in addressing the 58 Federal laws which “discriminate against us”.
“When people cast their votes on 24 November they will have a lot of issues on their minds,” she said.
“In my view, no issue cuts more to the heart of the political parties than their treatment of the human rights of Australians, specifically the right for same sex relationships to have equal recognition, equal rights.”
