Queer cuts in the country

The fifth Bendigo Queer Film Festival will take place over the weekend of 4-6 April, attracting serious cinephiles with a queer bent from around the country to the regional town.

It’s just one part of a larger festival program designed to celebrate everything queer. Other cultural highlights to look forward to include the Queer Country art exhibition and the FABulous after-party.

For a regional city like Bendigo to host a major gay event at all is a big achievement, BQFF convenor Julian Regan said.

This is one of the few opportunities we as a GLBTI community have to come together and celebrate publicly.

Drawing thousands of local and interstate visitors each year, the festival is a unique way to experience the old gold mining town.

This really is a community event. There is a very real sense of belonging associated with the festival, Regan said.

It’s bright, friendly, warm, stylish, relaxed and safe. Not only do you get to see fantastic films, mix with like-minded people, be that films buffs or sexual orientation, but all that in a gorgeous city of beautiful buildings, with prize-winning cafes and restaurants.

We produce a very professional event which exceeds the expectations of most patrons.

For some reason there is still the stereotype that the only major events worth attending or supporting are in the capital cities, but we encourage people to come along and get a taste of Bendigo and be surprised.
