Sex Pigs respond to campaign

A year since its inception, Positive Life’s Sex Pigs safe sex campaign for sexually adventurous positive people is working successfully, opening up new avenues for future prevention campaigns, says PL’s senior marketing and education officer Kathy Triffitt.

Sex Pigs: Dark and Dirty Sex and Managing Your Health launched last year as one of the first campaigns to address sexually confident positive men engaging in high risk acts, like fisting, group sex and drug use, by incorporating new understandings of the way ideas of safe sex can be redefined.

Positive Life NSW took a step into the comparative unknown with this campaign, by publicly owning the sexual energisation of positive men engaged in -˜sex pigs’ culture, Triffitt told Sydney Star Observer, adding that levels of engagement with the campaign have remained high, indicating its effectiveness.

As an approach to prevention it has been important to create spaces where men can talk openly about sex and the risks they have taken, and learn from each other about sex. The campaign messages have been about keeping it real -” using everyday language and images, which has been particularly significant in prevention work and could be further adopted in future prevention campaigns.

The Sex Pigs strategy will also be undergoing an external review in coming months to provide clearer indications of its successes and downfalls.
