Midsumma calls for artists

It’s still well over seven months away, but Melbourne’s largest queer festival Midsumma is calling for local artists, event organisers and sportspeople to be part of the 2011 showcase.

The festival is seeking participants for its Community Produced Events program which covers a range of events from theatre, spoken word, cabaret, film and live music to sporting events and social and political debates and forums.

Midsumma visual arts curator Tim Bateson encouraged new artists to get involved with the festival as a great way to break into the Australian arts scene.

“Artists previously involved in Midsumma have moved on to great things, and some have had their work shown in the National Gallery of Victoria and the National Gallery of Australia,” he said.

“There are various activities people can be involved with, and we welcome people with a whole range of experience, from newcomers to the professional.”

New and emerging artists or those looking to stage an event during the 2011 festival need to register at the Midsumma website by September 17.

The 2011 Midusmma Festival will run from January 16 to February 6.
