Amanda Stoker has been sworn in as Queensland’s new child safety minister, bringing a documented record of opposition to LGBTQIA+ protections to a portfolio responsible for vulnerable young people.

The Oodgeroo MP replaces Amanda Camm and will also oversee domestic and family violence prevention, families, seniors and disability services.

Her appointment comes amid continued opposition to trans health care for young people by the Crisafulli government.

Premier David Crisafulli has tied her performance to reducing residential care numbers and increasing foster placements and adoptions before the 2028 election. He did not specify an adoption target. Stoker was sworn in by Governor Jeannette Young on October 24.

Camm’s departure followed scrutiny over children sleeping in child safety offices and cuts to domestic violence prevention funding. She said stepping down was her decision. Stoker praised her predecessor and pledged to tackle the demanding portfolios.

For LGBTQIA+ Queenslanders, the appointment places Stoker’s positions on LGBTQIA+ and transgender rights under renewed scrutiny.

According to political website They Vote For You, her Senate record has consistently been against transgender rights, based on four votes against its defined policy and one absence. The recorded divisions include motions concerning treatment for gender diverse children and gender neutral language.

In 2019, Stoker attended a meeting with Liberal MP Andrew Hastie and religious leaders where the pair reportedly warned that proposed protections for LGBTQIA+ students in religious schools would infringe religious freedom. Equality advocates criticised opposition to safeguards against discrimination and expulsion.

In 2024, however, Stoker withdrew from launching a book by Rabbi Shimon Cowen after learning of his views on homosexuality. The LNP said she initially accepted without knowing those views and that the party had not organised the event.

Her promotion comes alongside LNP government decisions restricting transgender healthcare.

Queensland’s current ministerial direction prevents public hospital services from initiating puberty blockers or gender-affirming hormones for new patients under 18 with gender dysphoria. Those who began treatment before January 28, 2025, may continue where clinically indicated.

Education Minister John-Paul Langbroek also appointed Advance Australia co-founder James Power to the state’s curriculum and assessment board in 2025. Advance campaigned against trans women competing in women’s sport.

Former Queensland Premier and current leader of the Labor Party took to social media to point out Stoker’s views following her appointment, stating “he person who said sexuality is a choice is now the Minister responsible for Queensland’s LGBTQIA+ policy.”

Stoker now faces the task of delivering safer care for Queensland children while her record on LGBTQIA+ protections remains part of the scrutiny surrounding her appointment.
