INSPIRED by Thomas Hitzlsperger, lower-league English footballer Liam Davis has also publicly come out as gay.

Though his career is yet to reach the heights of Hitzlsperger, a former English Premier League star who was also part of the German World Cup squad, it is believed Davis is the only currently-active openly-gay footballer playing in the UK.

Playing for semi-professional Gainsborough Trinity, Davis came out to friends and family in 2009 but it was only uponjoininghiscurrentclubatthebeginning of this season that he came out publicly.

In a feature interview with his local paper the Lincolnshire Echo, the 23-year-old said he had respect for Hitzlsperger but admitted he had reservations.

“It would have been great if he had come out while he was still playing, then someone would have set the precedent,” Davis said.

“Until someone does, then everybody has to be in the closet. If he had done it, then a lot more would have followed.

“You have to respect, though, what he said about doing it at the right time for him. “Personally, I’m happy being out and proud of it.”
