Throw a kiss into your Kooky weekend
Have you been wondering lately where you can find shit DJs, ugly chicks, crap bands and sleazy guys on a Thursday night? I know I have, so I was thrilled to discover that there’s a place offering just that -“ right in the heart of Taylor Square every Thursday. Get your ass up to the Judgement Bar in the Courthouse tonight for Yo Mamma Said I’m Bad, where it’s so crappy it will make you happy, 10pm till 4am every week.
If you’re over in Newtown/Enmore, Queer Central at the Sly Fox is rocking it Wednesday nights with DJs Sveta, Bel West and Sandi Hotrod spinning house and electro and all sorts of eclectica from 9pm till 3am. The positive response to the recent shows at the Fox has resulted in a new revolving line-up including Glitter Supernova, Ghetto Pussy, Trash Vaudeville, I Kandi, Wife, Mitzi Mackintosh, Fancy Piece, Lillian Starr or Carmen Geddit performing each week at 10.30pm and 11.30pm. Entry is free.
On Friday night Rising GayDayPlay joins forces with Slide to present the Sweet Charity party, a fundraiser event for ACON. DJs Johan Khoury, Dan Murphy, Stryker, Luke Leal, Kitty Glitter, Troy Cox and Sandi Hotrod will be joined by host Verushka Darling and shows by the El Circo Cast and Billy Lofton. Slide has a vibrating dancefloor for this special event so have a boogie and feel the good vibes. It’s $10 on the door with all proceeds going to ACON.
The Midnight Shift turns 27 on Saturday night with guest LA DJ Mike Cruz and Sydney’s Murray Hood. Advance tickets are $25 from the Shift and Soleil Tanning. Orange people welcome, evidently.
One block west and the Action party at the Phoenix will feature Carlos Zarate playing deep house, clicky minimal tech, acid, German techno and brooding tribal beats from 10pm till 5am this Saturday -“ entry is $15. Handle Bar is in its third week up at Gilligans, with Bitch Science, Sveta vs Mark Murphy, Lovertits, a live performance by Emergency! Emergency! and a mystery set by a hot bitch New York DJ. It costs 10 bucks to find out who the hell that is.
Over in Newtown, Club Kooky returns to Hermann’s Bar at Sydney Uni on City Rd with residents Seymour and Gemma plus W.O.W. live. Seymour rocked it at Handle Bar last week with his deluge of fresh sounds so come hear the wobbly bass this Saturday, kooky things.
Olde Rave at the Oxford Art Factory on Saturday night is bombastic, completely fantastic with DJs playing old black plastic. Expect DJ Da Hoodrat playing acid house, Q45 rocking breakbeat rave, Jaime Doom dining out on electroclash, Kato banging that new NY Bass sound, Tha Fizz hammering out hip house, Outlaws dropping his classic rave bundle, Ritual smashing the speed garage, Destroy Disco mashing up bassline house and Cassette dropping classic electro raps. There’s even a shotgun wedding photo booth. Just be there!
If you’re looking for something less hectic, check out Bed in the St Margaret’s complex on Bourke Street and test your own inner vertical/horizontal needs when drinking or eating. I reckon about 90 degrees is good.
Mambo founder Dare Jennings is opening a second Deus ex Machina on Oxford St opposite the Midnight Shift soon. The Parramatta Rd, Camperdown, branch has been a cult destination for a while now, with the combination of retro motorcycles and big breakfasts working very well with inner-west foodies. I’m sure it will work well for cafe-starved Oxford St too.
If you don’t go out this Saturday, tune into Rage on the ABC because The Presets are guest programmers this week, followed by a synth pop special. I’d like to see the new Mika cover of Just Can’t Get Enough by Depeche Mode, if you please.
And don’t forget the Kiss-In at Taylor Square at 3pm on Saturday. It might not change the world -“ but it will be fun.

I love your column Danny, but if you think that Mika is worth listening to you need some sort of intervention. Please tell me that was a joke!
