TikTok has blamed human error for a delay in removing a disturbing livestream involving celebrity blogger Perez Hilton earlier this week, saying its automated safety systems detected the broadcast within minutes.

The platform faced questions after the livestream reportedly remained accessible for approximately 15 to 20 minutes despite its distressing nature and reports from viewers.

Many social media users jumped online to voice their concerns following the incident after Hilton was hospitalised when emergency services intervened.

A TikTok spokesperson said the company’s automated moderation technology flagged the broadcast shortly after it began and referred it to its US moderation team for assessment. However, what the platform described as a “moderator error” delayed both the removal of the livestream and the subsequent banning of Hilton’s account.

TikTok said the account has now been permanently banned for violating its community guidelines. The company’s policies prohibit content depicting or promoting suicide and self-harm.

Reports suggest Hilton attempted to continue broadcasting through multiple livestreams, complicating the platform’s response.

The incident unfolded on Tuesday night while Hilton, whose legal name is Mario Armando Lavandeira Jr., appeared to be experiencing a serious mental health crisis. The livestream contained distressing scenes that prompted viewers to call authorities in an attempt to help. Emergency services subsequently attended, and Hilton was taken to hospital.

Hilton was hospitalised and treated for sepsis for 21 days back in April, later taking to social media to announce that he had found god following the incident.

His family later confirmed that his three children, sister and niece had been at the home when the crisis began. They said the family members left immediately once the seriousness of the situation became clear, protecting the children from witnessing further trauma.

In their latest statement, Hilton’s family said he remained under medical care and that their immediate priority was his health and wellbeing. They also confirmed that the children were safe and being supported by relatives.

The family thanked those who had expressed concern and asked for privacy and compassion while Hilton receives treatment and they navigate what they described as an extremely difficult period.

“Many of you have reached out with concern for Perez, and we are incredibly grateful for the overwhelming outpouring of love, support, and prayers” they said.

“We can confirm that Perez is receiving medical care, and our family’s focus right now is on his well-being.”

“We kindly ask that you respect Perez’s privacy, as well as the privacy of his family, during this difficult time.

“If and when we are able to share any updates, we will do so with everyone as soon as we can.

“Thank you for your compassion, understanding, and continued support.”
