Gay-friendly church to run young adults program

The Metropolitan Community Church of Sydney (MCC) will host a Young Adult’s Group for LGBTIQ Christians on Friday, December 21.

The new sessions are part of the MCC’s Project Thrive, a young adult’s ministry designed to reshape the way young gay Christians view themselves and their faith.

Project Thrive coordinator Alex Pittaway said the sessions aimed to attract young people who might be turned off by more established forms of Christianity.

“We want to move away from a conception of faith based on judgmental legalism and promote one of empowerment and community,” he said.

The MCC has a history of involvement with the LGBTI community in Sydney.

“We’re a church which says you can be gay and Christian, and we help young people especially to reconcile their faith and their sexuality,” Pittaway said.

The sessions will be hosted at the MCC’s Petersham chapel.
