Femme conference nears

Sydney queer feminist organisation Sydney Femme Guild is hosting a conference during Mardi Gras on community diversity and ‘femme’ identity.

The Newtown-based lesbian community group will host the ‘Unpacking Femme’ conference at the University of Technology over two days in early February.

The summit will include workshops and discussion groups on femme and Sydney queer issues. American writers and LGBTI activists Amber Hollibaugh and Leah Lakshmi Piepzna-Samarsinha, as well as Melbourne-based queer journalist and disability rights advocate Kath Duncan will feature as keynote speakers.

Femme Guild president Bex Hulands said the conference was a way for femme-identifying queer woman to express their identity and share experiences.

“Our first conference in 2011 had over 100 attendees, and with the international speakers and Mardi Gras we’re expecting many more than that,” Hulands said.
