Benstix score gold in Cologne

Sydney’s Bentstix men’s hockey team got its revenge on the Dutch team when it won gold in Cologne at the Gay Games last Friday. At the Sydney Gay Games in 2002, the Dutch team took home gold when it defeated Bentstix in the final. The gold medal will now come back to Sydney after a resounding 2-0 victory.

Bentstix took early advantage in the first half when it scored its first goal after numerous shots. Captain Bren Duckworth slammed the ball in off a penalty corner to throw the challenge up to the Dutch but they never recovered. Early in the second half, Scott Evans deceived the goalkeeper and slammed in Bentstix’ second goal. From then, the Dutch never really showed any challenge and Bentstix took the gold medal with relative ease.

This gold medal adds to Bentstix impressive tally of gold in recent years, first at the EuroGames in 2005 in Utrecht, then at the World Outgames 2009 in Copenhagen. Bentstix remains the most successful gay hockey club in the world and looks forward to another outing next year for the 2nd Asia-Pacific Outgames in Wellington.
