Meet Jack, Joel and Justin: the three strapping Sydney lads who have bared the souls on life with Grindr in a new webseries called The Grindr Guide.

They are just three out of at least 150,000 Sydneysiders who used Grindr in 2012 – the home of the Opera House is ranked sixth in the world for Grindr users while Australia ranks fourth in the world with some 250,000 users nationwide.

So we like to chat. Or perhaps as Melbourne comedian Nath Valvo puts it “as long as there is some kind of communication, gays will work out how to use that for sex”.

These guys, along with outside opinions from Valvo, academic Sen Raj and Grindr creator Joel Simkhai, weigh in on some real experiences of Grindr – shaking up the idea that life is now just one hook-up after another for gay men.

Some gay men want more than that and at least it seems from this series that it’s not that easy, even with software that hunts down gay men and filters out the unappealing ones.

The eight-part series is generally light hearted but also takes on some controversial issues raised with how the app is used including racism and body issues.

It was launched on Sunday, despite being filmed during Mardi Gras 2012, and has so far released three of its episodes with all episodes available by March 17.

Most episodes run under the five minute mark which makes for an enjoyable bite-size look at specific points.

“Grindr has the reputation of being a hook-up app, and I wanted to see how justified that stigma is,” director Damien Dunstan said.

“What we actually found is that people are using Grindr for all kinds of reasons: we followed guys who use Grindr to make friends; those who use it as a starting point for more traditional dating; and of course, there’s a significant portion that do use it purely for casual sex.”

Here’s a playlist of the first three episodes out so far:
