Channel Nine faces claims of homophobia again

Channel Nine is facing a flurry of complaints over its coverage of the Winter Olympics, following a series of homophobic comments made by Eddie McGuire and Mick Molloy.

Commentating on the figure skating performance given by three-time US champion Johnny Weir, McGuire and Molloy began to poke fun of the Lady Gaga-inspired routine.

Joking that Weir “left nothing in the closet”, and making references to Brokeback Mountain, the pair’s jocular routine continued.

Irate Twitter users instantly started filling the site with complaints about the duo’s comic styling.

Southern Star’s sister paper, Sydney Star Observer, began fielding its own barrage of complaints this morning.

Channel Nine has been contacted for further comment about how many official complaints were received and whether any action will be taken by management over the issue.

  1. Can take Eddie out of poor catholic schools in Reservoir, but can’t take the poor catholic school in Reservoir out of Eddie.

He may live in Toorak, but that is no ticket to sophistication. He and Sam (N) have common elements when formulating their notions of humour; Gay males are second class citizens and expendable for a laugh.

A few nights ago during Mick’s segment on ice hockey they allowed the comments of some trailer park trash deriding the performances of some players by repeated referring to them as ‘poofters’ to be aired. Cheap laughs for the low- bars at our expense, again.

No doubt they will vindicate their stand and little will eventually happen in the wash. The likes of Newman and Kennett testify to this. I suggest a mode of operation usually reserved for politicians; a newspaper role to the head.

I pity those whom are Gay in the Nine network.
