Human rights centre named after Kirby

Retired Australian High Court judge and vocal gay and lesbian rights champion Michael Kirby will have a new centre for human rights named after him.

The Michael Kirby Centre for Public Health and Human Rights will be officially launched in Melbourne this week by Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS executive director Michel Sidibé at the Positive Living Centre in South Yarra.

The Centre will involve academic experts from Monash University’s School of Public Health and Preventative Medicine who will research and develop stronger human rights and public health policies.

Kirby will work with lawyers, ethicists, medical practitioners and scientists from the Centre to look at the connection between human rights, public health and law, with a particular focus on vulnerable communities in Australia and worldwide.

Kirby was this year named the joint winner of a US legal award, the Gruber Justice Prize. He was also recently appointed to a United Nations Global Commission on HIV and the Law.
