Up a pole

Up a pole

Something I have been associated with for many years is pole dancing, stumbling into this sport through an exotic dancer competition I hosted many years ago.
Next thing I knew I was up a pole, trying to make it look half as graceful as the teachers, flapping around like a fish out of water.
I trained very hard, so hard that I even have a pole move named after me — the Maxi.
From pulled muscles to bruising up and down the insides of my legs, I moved from actual pole dancing to being the pole school’s official MC.
This Friday will see the country’s best pole dancers compete for the title of Miss Pole Dance Australia. The winner will head to the World Championship to compete for the crown of Miss Pole Dance World.
If you still believe pole dancing is something you just see at a strip club, it would knock you off your feet to see how serious these girls are.
A young girl from Perth named Felix started pole dancing about four years ago. Last year she won Miss Pole Dance Australia, with moves that defied gravity. With her Australian title, she was flown to Jamaica where she won Miss Pole Dance World. She was then flown to Las Vegas where she auditioned and earned herself a lead role in Zumanity Cirque de Soleil. She has featured on The Conan O’Brien Show and is filming with Tyra Banks when she returns to the US. A little pole dancing can really take you places.
It’s as graceful as a ballet but with some sex appeal to keep it saucy. I’m a fan of anything that includes everyone. In classes you find people from every walk of life, shapes and sizes, and it’s not just girls swinging from the poles either.
Miss Pole Dance Australia kicks off this Friday at the Enmore Theatre at 8pm, hosted by me and the fabulous Chilli. The night will feature the best in Australia. Felix has been flown out to perform and Miss USA will be performing. I will perform a number that will prove I still have a finger in the pie.
