Plenty on your plate

Plenty on your plate

It’s certainly getting to the pointy end of the year for many in the community, and I’m not talking about the hard-working HSC students! The Northern Rivers has plenty on its metaphorical plate as we lead in to AIDS Awareness Week for 2011.

World AIDS Day is a great opportunity to improve visibility and work around HIV issues, especially stigma, discrimination and community education.

ACON Northern Rivers will be selling red ribbons around the region and we continue on from last year’s successful and special Candlelight Vigil on December 1 at Spinks Park, Lismore.

I am deep in preparations for my Tantalising Trivia Fundraiser to be held on Thursday, November 24, from 7-11pm at the Lismore Workers Club. With raunchy and fun trivia, entertainment and prizes galore, this is a wonderful opportunity to socialise and make a difference to the lives of people living with HIV in the Northern Rivers of NSW.

For bookings and more info, please call 02 6622 1555.

The inaugural Community Sector Ball is being held at the Byron Community Centre, Johnson St, Byron Bay on Saturday, November 5. This is a celebration and awards night for the local community sector and features MC Mandy Nolan,

Laura Nobel and the Big Swing, Hearing Voices Choir and many more. There will be awards, prizes and the Northern Rivers GLAM Best Dressed Award.

A light dinner will be served and all this will only cost (including booking fee) part-time/casual workers $23 and full-time workers $28. For more information about tickets and nominations, please visit www.nrsdc.org.au/html

And last but not least, ACON is having a strong presence at the second CoastOut Festival in Coffs Harbour on October 28 – 30.

Come and visit our Coffs Harbour Outreach Officer Anabell Thoener, me, and Marie Reilly, our fabulous new Lesbian Health Promotion Officer at our special “clinic” at the CoastOut Fair Day. Expect the unexpected!
