Up and coming

After an all-too-short break following a huge year in 2010, WayOut project staff and young people have hit the ground running in 2011.

High on the exciting list of things to do is organising our next big camp which will bring together about 60 rural young people and their workers from across Victoria.

The camp will be run over the long weekend in March and will be held just outside Daylesford so we can join in some of the great activities happening as part of the annual ChillOut Festival.

We have a jam-packed program of guest speakers, strategic planning and sexual health information sessions as well as attending the street parade and carnival in the park.

Of course, many arrangements are also being made for the drug- and alcohol-free young people’s dance party on the Saturday night!

Speaking of camps, many of you may have heard that we won our complaint of discrimination against Christian Youth Camps Ltd in VCAT last year.

The matter goes back to an incident in 2007 when we tried to book a camping facility they operate in Phillip Island. The Tribunal found we had been refused the booking because of the same-sex sexual orientation of workers and young people who proposed to go there for the weekend.

This was a real victory for all the people involved and we would like to sincerely thank all of the people in the GLBTI and mainstream community who supported us through the gruelling process.

As was anticipated, however, Christian Youth Camps Ltd is appealing the decision and we are scheduled to attend a hearing in the Court of Appeal on February 4.

So stay tuned and keep an eye on our website, Facebook and Twitter for updates!
