With a surge in media comment about legislation to end discrimination against same-sex couples, civil celebrant David Schneider has received a significant increase in enquiries with couples asking how it will affect them.

Schneider said although cohabiting same-sex couples are recognised as de facto couples, with the same rights as cohabiting heterosexual couples under state law, and same-sex couples have access to domestic partnership registries in New South Wales, Tasmania and Victoria, and civil partnerships in the Australian Capital Territory, many couples want the full recognition of a marriage.
